The HPG Homes State League 2 Championship Final brought together the premiers of the North and South, with Pontian Eagles and Vipers FC battling it out for the ultimate prize automatic promotion to HPG Homes State League 1.
On a perfect night for football, Pontian Eagles took on Vipers FC, with both teams determined to walk away with the glory of promotion.
Vipers started the night strongly, creating the majority of the early opportunities. A number of promising chances were either saved by the Pontian goalkeeper or thwarted by last-ditch defensive efforts, keeping Vipers at bay.
A risky 31st-minute challenge from Oyeyemi Abioye gave Pontian their best opportunity of the first half, earning them a free kick just outside the box. However, the resulting effort was comfortably gathered by Vipers goalkeeper Seth Buttery.
Another free kick was awarded to Pontian on the stroke of half-time, with George Katsigiannis seeing his effort skim past the far post.
Both sides had opportunities throughout the opening 45 minutes, but neither could find the breakthrough, sending the teams into the half-time interval locked at 0-0.
The second half began in much the same fashion as the first, with both teams coming out swinging and desperate to find a result. Pontian began to turn up the pressure, creating a number of chances and setting the tone for the second half.
That pressure eventually proved too much for Vipers.
In the 83rd minute, a misplaced pass towards the goalkeeper left the Vipers defence scrambling. George Katsigiannis pounced on the loose ball and attempted to bend his effort into the far corner. Vipers goalkeeper Seth Buttery managed to get a hand to the ball, but the deflection fell perfectly for Pontian substitute Brett Savill.
Savill kept his composure, flicking the ball back into the box for Katsigiannis, who made no mistake from close range, tapping the ball into an open goal.
The deadlock had finally been broken, sending the 1,800-strong crowd into wild celebrations.
With just six minutes of normal time remaining, it was all hands on deck for Vipers. Throwing everyone forward in search of an equaliser, they piled the pressure onto Pontian's defence.
A 98th-minute goalmouth scramble almost produced the equaliser. A deflected shot zipped narrowly past the wrong side of the post, leaving Vipers players with their heads in their hands as they realised they had come agonisingly close.
Pontian's players threw their bodies on the line, making last-ditch defensive efforts and challenging for every loose ball as they desperately protected their crucial lead.
The nine minutes of added time eventually came to an end, and Pontian had done enough to be crowned HPG Homes State League 2 champions.
Elation and an outpouring of emotion followed as Pontian's players cleared the bench to celebrate together, while Vipers players dropped to their knees, heartbroken after coming so close.
The victory sees Pontian Eagles return to State League 1 in 2027. However, there is still hope for Vipers FC, who will have a second chance at promotion when they enter the final series alongside the other top-four sides from the HPG Homes State League 2 North and South competitions.
