Imagine for a moment that your child is the one standing on the field, officiating a game amidst the cheers and jeers of the crowd. How would you feel if they were subjected to intimidation or abuse? Our young referees, some as young as your own children, face this reality every match day. It’s time we ask ourselves: What if it was our child out there? What can we do to better protect and respect our young referees on the field?
At Football South Australia (FSA), we are fiercely committed to creating a safe, respectful, and supportive environment for all our participants. This commitment is not just about words; it is about taking tangible actions to protect those who are vulnerable among us. This season, we are proud to introduce a new initiative designed to enhance the safety and respect for our young match officials: bright orange armbands for referees under the age of 18, branded with the FSA values of Passion, Unity, and Respect.
What steps can we take to protect our young referees' safety and increase their confidence? The bright orange armbands will serve as a visible reminder to players, coaches, parents, and spectators that these referees are minors and deserve special consideration.
Purpose of the Initiative:
Visible Identification: The bright orange armbands will identify our young match officials, serving as a clear sign to players, coaches, parents, and spectators that these referees are minors.
Protection and Respect: The armbands emphasise that our under-18 officials are protected by Football South Australia's Safeguarding Policy, and they deserve the utmost respect and consideration.

Key Benefits:
Enhanced Safety and Protection:
- The armbands reinforce our commitment to the welfare and protection of young referees.
- They serve as a deterrent to potential abuse or intimidation, creating a safer environment for officiating.
Promoting a Culture of Respect:
- Encourages all participants to treat young officials with the respect and patience they deserve.
- Serves as a continuous reminder of the need for civil and courteous conduct towards under-18 officials.
- They set a high standard for behaviour, cultivating a more respectful and considerate football community.
Increased Referee Retention:
- Knowing they are visibly supported by a protective policy boosts the confidence of young referees, encouraging them to continue officiating.
- This leads to increased retention of match officials, ensuring greater coverage of games.
- Better protection helps improve match quality, as more experienced and confident referees are available to officiate.
Get Involved:
We encourage all members of our football community to support this initiative and help us create a positive and respectful environment for our young match officials. Think about the difference it would make if everyone treated young referees as if they were their own children. Together, we can make a profound impact and ensure that our football matches are safe and enjoyable for everyone involved.
Respect starts here, with each one of us doing our part. There is no game without our referees. Let’s protect them, respect them, and support them. Because, truly, what if it was your child out there?
