Exciting Times As SA Now Have 3 FIFA Officials

Football South Australia is proud to recognise three South Australian match officials who have been appointed to the FIFA lists for 2026, highlighted by Paula Orlandi being appointed to the FIFA Assistant Referee list. She is joined by Isabella Blaess, who has retained her place on the FIFA list, and Daniel Elder, who has retained his FIFA Referee position while also earning selection to the FIFA Video Match Official (VMO) list for the first time.

Paula Orlandi’s appointment to the FIFA Assistant Referee list marks a significant milestone in a career built on consistency, dedication, and sustained high performance. This achievement is the result of years of quiet professionalism, supported by a strong desire to learn and a clear commitment to excellence. Her journey demonstrates what is possible when talent is matched with preparation, resilience, and a willingness to do the work week after week.

Paula first registered as a referee in 2014 while still playing football. Her talent was quickly recognised and rewarded, and in 2016 she was selected for the FFA National Youth Championships (Girls), where she excelled and was named the tournament’s top referee and subsequently appointed to the W-League Panel in 2017. Her recent career highlights include appointment as Assistant Referee 2 for the 2024–25 Ninja A-League Women’s Grand Final, selection as Assistant Referee for the Hahn Australia Cup Final 2025, and ongoing national appointments. These marquee selections reflect the trust placed in her decision making, teamwork, and composure in high-pressure match environments. This FIFA appointment reflects a journey defined by professionalism and an unwavering commitment to improvement.

Michelle Smith, General Manager Referees, Football South Australia, said:
“Paula’s journey is defined by preparation, humility, and an unwavering focus on performance. I am extremely proud to have supported and watched her grow from day one, and this FIFA Assistant Referee appointment reflects her character as much as her technical ability.”

Paula Orlandi reflected:
"An achievement like this wouldn’t have been possible without the help of numerous people throughout the years. From all the coaches who have given me advice to my dad driving me around to matches and training when I first started and the numerous physio appointments along the way. I’m forever grateful to each and every single person who has played a role in my career. It takes a village to achieve something like this and I’m excited and nervous to see what this new chapter brings and hope to do it justice as wearing the badge is a huge honour."

These appointments collectively reflect the strength of South Australia’s referee development pathways, and Football South Australia congratulates Paula, Isabella, and Daniel on their achievements at international level.
