An event aimed at uniting the community to celebrate the Draw for the FIFA Women’s World Cup Australia & New Zealand 2023TM, a sunny day in Gepps Cross last Saturday did not disappoint.
The day kicked off with an exhibition between AFCON & COPA AMERICA teams. A multitude of nations with different backgrounds choose to be part of the Football Five5 including Brazil, Burundi, Flinders Uni, Colombia, South Sudan and Argentina.
About 50 women and girls participants, enjoyed the social football competition, including Adelaide City forward Mawa Sumaoro who told Football SA that she is using the Football Five5 format to maintain her fitness during the off-season. Teams had a fair amount of supporters from all attendees including their friends and families to create an authentic World Cup atmosphere. The ever-passionate crowd could be heard from afar, especially the Brazilians, who could not stop.
Local fans were excited to watch the Adelaide United Liberty A-League side in an open training session ahead of the new season which is fast approaching, followed by an opportunity for fans to meet their heroes in a Meet & Greet for selfies and autographs. Coach Adrian Stenta said;
"It's always great to have this kind of football event which brings everyone together. It's something great that Australia gets to host such a worldwide tournament such as the FIFA Women’s World Cup, especially in my home city too."
Football SA's Kimberly Conte, Head of WWC Adelaide & Legacy said organising such events is a major key to success.
I am thrilled to be a part of it (Draw Day). Seeing multiple cultures from different backgrounds to attend and celebrate this moment is so fantastic to see. We are so excited to see who will be drawn in Adelaide. Everyone is welcome!"
Before the highly anticipated draw, a pre-panel, hosted by Football SA Commentators Paul Marcuccitti and Hayley Routley, spoke to Adelaide United's Isabel Hodgson, Dylan Holmes and goalkeeper Annalee Grove, to discuss the draw and gain their insights.
Then to the draw, which was filled with groans, cheers and excitement from the 250 fans that packed into the ServiceFM Stadium Function Room, who witnessed the confirmation that Adelaide/Tarntanya will welcome Brazil, European Champions England, Korea Republic, China and Morocco.
