Jets welcome Croydon in a classic six-pointer | NPLSA Round 6 Preview

Adelaide City vs Adelaide United FC
Venue: Adelaide City Park
Date: Saturday 29 August 3:00PM

City’s return to winning ways has seen them climb the ladder into fifth and now do battle with United, a side they are yet to face after the fixture’s postponement soon after the restart.

A 2-0 away win over the lowly Knights was City’s second on the trot, a burst of form that has seen them entrench themselves in the logjam between second and eighth separated by three points.

United, meanwhile, suffered a heavy 3-0 home defeat to an impressive Cumberland United side, leaving them four points adrift of the Jets in tenth and the only side left in the competition sitting on just one win.

The two clubs will be well acquainted soon enough as their postponed fixture is set to take place just 11 days after their first.

Adelaide Comets vs Adelaide Blue Eagles
Venue: SA Athletics Stadium
Date: Saturday 29 August 3:00PM

Comets’ exceptional recent form has seen them shoot ahead of the rest of the competition, but the resurgent Blue Eagles present one of their toughest assignments yet.

Last weekend’s 4-1 thrashing of finals rival MetroStars was the home side’s fifth victory on the spin and widened their lead at the top to five points, placing them in pole position as the league’s most formidable side.

Blue Eagles have also been hugely impressive since the break, with an eight-match unbeaten run a far cry from the one point they gained from their four fixtures prior to the suspension of the season.

Despite first versus seventh not sparking much interest on paper, SA Athletics Stadium is hosting two of the league’s form sides tomorrow in what should be a fascinating encounter.

Match Officials: Daniel Goodwin (Referee), Cole Davy & Harold Spanner (Assistant Referees)

Modbury Jets vs Croydon Kings
Venue: Smith Partners Stadium
Date: Saturday 29 August 3:00PM

The struggling Jets host a consistently inconsistent Kings side in what should be a crucial encounter at the other end of the table.

Holding the high-flying Raiders to a 2-2 draw away from home was very much a step in the right direction for the Jets, who have now only avoided defeat twice since the resumption of the season and boast an unenviable record of eight matches without victory.

The Kings have oscillated between the top four and bottom four over the past few weeks, with their wins over Olympic and MetroStars backed up by losses to Comets and Blue Eagles.

Despite the positive result last week, the Jets are still in freefall and must start picking up points to avoid becoming embroiled in a relegation scrap, while the Kings are crying out for a purple patch to propel themselves clear of the bottom.

MetroStars vs Para Hills Knights
Venue: TK Shutter Reserve
Date: Saturday 29 August 3:00PM

MetroStars walked away from their match against Comets with their tails between their legs and will be seeking to atone for the heavy loss when they face the Knights tomorrow.

The 4-1 defeat would have stung the former ladder leaders, as they saw their lead at the top dwindle and eventually stripped away by Comets to now sit six points off the pace.

The Knights are another side currently in freefall, their 2-0 loss to Adelaide City marking their fifth consecutive loss and leaving them marooned at the bottom of the table.

The home side are desperate to claw their way back to the top of the table and a win tomorrow will boost those aspirations, while the Knights can only hope their form takes a turn for the better fast.

Match Officials: Garry Powers (Referee), Andrew Citti & Thomas Temby (Assistant Referees)

Cumberland United vs Campbelltown City
Venue: A.A. Bailey Reserve
Date: Saturday 29 August 5:00PM

United and City face off in one of Round 6’s late games, which promises to be a thoroughly entertaining contest between two strong sides.

United, after a more than shaky start to life in the state’s top division, have recovered from three straight losses to just one in their last nine fixtures, most recently accounting for Adelaide United 3-0.

City have also fared well since the restart but were shocked 2-1 at home by an out of sorts Olympic, a loss that saw their two-point deficit on top spot increase to five.

The visitors are now aiming to keep pace with the top of the ladder and capitalise on any slip ups, so victory over one of the league’s form teams, who is also vying for higher honours, would be enormous for them.

Match Officials: Nicholas Quirk (Referee), Alexander Diamond & Joe-Jordan Tripodi (Assistant Referees)

Cumberland United: Antoni Panagoulias, Aristomenios Haralampopoulos, 1. Luke Schoen (GK), 2. Jack Schoen (C), 3. Joshua Harvey, 4. Declan Gray, 5. Sam Carmichael, 6. Christopher Skull, 8. Adelaide Olympic vs Raiders
Venue: Valo Football Centre
Date: Saturday 29 August 6:00PM

Olympic will enter tomorrow night’s fixture buoyed by their impressive victory last week, facing up against a Raiders side who are aiming for victory after dropping points themselves.

Post-break football has largely brought pain to Olympic after a promising start but their shock 2-1 win over Campbelltown City, their second of the season, will renew the club’s confidence that they can aim higher than their current eighth position.

Raiders missed the opportunity to seize second spot on the ladder thanks to a 2-2 home draw against a Jets side in desperately poor form, now having to settle for fourth with Adelaide City, Cumberland United, Blue Eagles and Olympic breathing down their necks.

A win for Olympic would be huge in the context of their season and would likely see them rise up the table, while Raiders must keep winning to stay in touch with the league’s top sides.

Match Officials: Daniel Cook (Referee), Henry Day & Daniel Bryant (Assistant Referees)
