For many young footballers, the dream of playing in the A-League Women’s competition is a powerful motivator. For Ellie, that dream took an unexpected but rewarding turn, one that has led to her debut as a Match Official in the ALW this Friday, 7 February 2025, at Coopers Stadium.
Since picking up the whistle in 2021, Ellie has carved out an impressive refereeing pathway. Her key milestones include:
- NPL Assistant Referee debut 2023
- National Tournament Experience:
- NYC Girls (2022)
- Uni Games (2023)
- NTC Challenge (2023)
- NYC Boys (2024)
- FARA Batch 2 (2024 - ongoing)

Reflecting on her journey, Ellie says:
"I started playing football when I was 10, and it was always a dream of mine to one day be able to play in the ALW. In 2022, I was playing in the WNPL and juggling refereeing. After being sent to a tournament that same year, I realised that my passion for officiating was something that I wanted to pursue. Now, three years after hanging up my boots, I’m making my A-League Women’s debut—not as a player, but as an official. The knowledge I've been able to transfer from my nine years of playing to officiating has immensely helped me. If you're a player thinking of taking up refereeing, I couldn’t recommend anything more. I cannot wait for this match and I’m looking forward to working with an amazing team!"
Ellie’s story highlights the opportunities available to players who want to stay involved in the game beyond playing. The skills developed on the field, decision-making, reading the game, and staying composed under pressure, translate seamlessly into officiating. Refereeing provides a new challenge, a fresh way to contribute to the game, and a pathway to elite football that is increasingly accessible.
For Michelle Smith, General Manager of Referee Education, Training, and Compliance, seeing Ellie’s transition from player to official has been a rewarding journey:
"Watching Ellie progress from her first days as a Match Official to making her ALW debut has been incredible. She has embraced every challenge, developed her skills, and is now stepping into an elite environment with so much potential still ahead of her. This is just the beginning of the next step in her career, and I have no doubt there is plenty more to come."
Ellie’s debut is a testament to her dedication, but it also serves as inspiration for current players considering officiating. The game needs quality referees, and former players bring valuable experience that can help them succeed at the highest levels.
