Three rounds to go in the WNPLSA | Round 12 Preview

Adelaide Comets vs Adelaide University
Venue: Valo Football Centre
Date: Friday 28 August 6:15 PM

It’s the battle between the bottom two in this encounter, as Comets and Uni face off in the battle to avoid the 2020 WNPL wooden spoon.

Comets were gallant in their narrow 2-1 defeat to finals-bound Metro, which was their third loss in as many matches but a significant improvement on the 6-2 thrashing by West and 8-1 demolition at the hands of City.

Uni had a rough time against West last week, going down 4-0 to a West side chasing the double chance to leave them rooted to the bottom of the table with three rounds to go.

A win will see them leapfrog their opponents and bring sixth-placed Fulham within touching distance, while three points to Comets would go a long way to condemning Uni to eighth spot at season’s end.

Salisbury Inter vs Fulham United
Venue: Valo Football Centre – Pitch 2
Date: Friday 28 August 6:15 PM

Inter enter the match against Fulham with a point to prove after ceding second spot to West last week, fumbling their hold on a double chance position.

The 2-1 loss to City was the first time any side had held the leaders to less than four goals since Round 1 but, unfortunately, the loss meant Inter had little to show for their effort and slid to third after successive losses.

Meanwhile, Fulham have now lost seven of their last eight fixtures and were officially ruled out of the race for the finals, and were leapfrogged, by NTC.

Inter must win all of their remaining matches and hope other results go their way to have a chance of reclaiming second, while Fulham only have pride to play for now and are trying to avoid dropping further down the table.

West Adelaide vs Metro United WFC
Venue: Valo Football Centre
Date: Friday 28 August 8:15 PM

West will be buoyed by reclaiming the second spot on the ladder from Inter last week but must keep winning to stave off the two sides below them, including their opponents tonight.

A 4-0 triumph over Uni saw West win their second in as many games and capitalise on Inter’s slip up, pushing them two points clear of third and three clear of fourth.

Metro are still well and truly in the hunt for the top two, however, as three wins on the trot have seen them cement their place in the top four and bring the teams above them within striking distance.

A win for Metro would draw them level on points with West, albeit with a far inferior goal difference, but a victory for West will all but end their opponents’ top two aspirations.

Football SA NTC vs Adelaide City
Venue: Valo Football Centre – Pitch 2
Date: Friday 28 August 8:15 PM

NTC have leapt past their nearest opponents after successive victories but now face the toughest assignment in women’s football: a match against Adelaide City.

A 2-0 win over Fulham came after NTC’s 2-1 upset victory over Inter and narrow 3-2 loss to Metro, highlighting the side’s improved form over the last three weeks.

City faced their toughest test since the start of the season but edged out Inter to widen their lead at the top of the table to six points with three rounds to go.

Their incredible 21-goal buffer on second-placed West means that a win tonight will effectively sew up top spot with two rounds to go, but NTC will enter with the confidence that they have been able to match it with some of the league’s top sides in recent weeks.
