Football South Australia is deeply saddened by the passing of Donald Campbell, a revered figure in the South Australian football community and one of our game’s most distinguished referees.
Donald’s contribution to the sport was exceptional and pioneering. He holds the honour of being South Australia’s first referee to receive a FIFA badge, a milestone that marked his reputation not only at home but also on the international stage. His calm authority, professionalism, and unwavering integrity set the benchmark for generations of referees who followed in his footsteps.

Over the years, Donald served the game with tireless dedication, officiating countless matches across all levels of competition, mentoring young referees, and upholding the spirit of the game with humility and pride.
In recognition of his lifelong service and influence, Donald was inducted into the Football South Australia Hall of Fame and awarded Life Membership and also inducted into the Football Australia Hall of Fame in 1999. His accolades reflect the deep respect and gratitude held for him by the football community.
Donald’s legacy will endure through the many officials, coaches, and players whose lives he touched, both on and off the pitch. He leaves behind an indelible mark on the game in South Australia.
We extend our heartfelt condolences to Donald’s family and loved ones during this time of loss.
As per Donald’s personal wishes and in line with the family’s request, a private family funeral will be held, and no public service or gathering will take place. The family has respectfully asked for privacy during this time as they mourn the loss.
Rest in peace, Donald — your whistle may be silent, but your impact echoes on.
