WNPLSA & WSL Preview | Round 17

Metro United WFC vs WT Birkalla
6:30 pm | Friday 19 August | ServiceFM Stadium
Last Meeting:
(27/5/22) Round Eight | WT Birkalla 0 v Metro United WFC 3

WT Birkalla
Facebook: West Torrens Birkalla SC

With only two games remaining a win for Metro United WFC is vital for their ambitions this season, with a place in this season's Finals Series still up for grabs. Currently sitting in sixth, Metro United WFC sits five points away from fifth-placed Football SA NTC, meaning even a win may not be enough to keep the team in contention. Needing Football SA NTC to lose both of their next two games, Metro United WFC will still give their best shot at achieving a Finals Series spot. Winning their last match 3-0 over Fulham United with a Roxanne Dodd double and Talia Bilardo’s first goal of the season, Metro United WFC will be looking to make it two wins in a row.

Metro United WFC won comfortably in their last match with WT Birkalla as they secured a 3-0 win. Emma Cotgrove, Victoria Mansueto and Sarah Taylor were all on the scoresheet in that victory.

WT Birkalla's fight for survival comes down to their final two games, with a loss against Metro United WFC potentially being detrimental to their season. Still without a win this season, WT Birkalla had a perfect opportunity to leave the bottom place, however, a 1-1 draw with fellow relegation competitors Modbury Vista has seen the team remain at the bottom of the WNPLSA by one point. A point could be enough for the team to leave the bottom of the table if Modbury Vista is to drop points.

Having missed out on the Premiership and losing in the WNPL & WSL Cup Final last week to West Adelaide, Adelaide City will be eager to begin their push for the Championship with a statement win over Adelaide Comets this week. Currently sitting in second, a win for Adelaide City will see them guarantee a second-place finish this season, holding a big advantage in the Finals Series. Currently, on the back of an impressive 2-1 victory over Salisbury Inter in their last WNPLSA match which saw Valeria Guajardo score a double, Adelaide City will be hoping to continue their winning form heading into the Finals Series.

This victory saw a masterclass in finishing by Adelaide Comets forwards as Chrissy Panagaris scored five and Georgie Nicola scored a hattrick. West Adelaide

Football SA NTC is now only one win away from securing a top five place and their second consecutive Finals Series appearance. Losing their last match 3-1 to Adelaide Comets last round put an end to the team's three-game winning streak, putting a little pressure on them heading into the final two games of the season. Although facing a difficult challenge in the form of West Adelaide, Football SA NTC will be hoping to secure the three points to potentially have a chance to compete for third and fourth next week.

West Adelaide produced another dominant display in their last matchup with Football SA NTC as they won 5-0. Harriet Burnett and Nicole Blackett both contributed to braces in their 5-0 win, while Racheal Quigley scored one of her 23 goals this season in that fixture.

West Adelaide will be extremely pleased with their achievements thus far this season, with all their hard work over the year paying off in the last two weeks as they secured the Premiership and WNPL & WSL Cup. In their last league fixture, West Adelaide produced a 6-0 victory over Adelaide University, with Racheal Quigley’s four goals helping assist the team to victory. Adelaide University vs Modbury Vista

Last Meeting:
(27/5/22) Round Eight | Modbury Vista 1 v Adelaide University 3

Adelaide University
Facebook: Adelaide University Soccer Club

Losing all their last four games, Adelaide University’s hopes of an appearance in this season's Finals Series has come to an end. Facing a 6-0 defeat to league premiers in West Adelaide last week, Adelaide University’s hopes were diminished meaning that the team will now play in their final two games of the season. Although missing out on Finals, Adelaide University has drastically improved this season, already surpassing their total points from the 21-round 2021 season. Adelaide University will still be looking to have a strong end to the season as they search for their seventh win of the season.

Adelaide University was 3-1 victors in their Round 8 match with Modbury Vista, which saw goals by Stella Rigon, Hayley Needs and Chanel Todino secure the victory, while Leah Noto scored one for Modbury Vista.

Modbury Vista's fight for survival will come down to the final days of the season. A win this round over Adelaide University will see them secure their first win of the season, while potentially taking them out of contention for relegation altogether. The team missed a prime opportunity to leave the bottom two last round as a 1-1 draw with bottom place WT Birkalla, saw Modbury Vista remain only one point off the bottom spot. With the season heading into its final weeks, all points will be valuable in the team's fight for survival.

Fulham United vs Salisbury Inter
4:15 pm | Saturday 20 August | West Beach Parks Football Centre
Last Meeting:
(27/5/22) Round Eight | Salisbury Inter 9 v Fulham United 1

Salisbury Inter

Currently only three points off bottom place in eighth, Fulham United could potentially see themselves clear of relegation with a point in this weekend’s fixture. Fulham United are currently on a two-game losing run, with their most recent defeat occurring in a 3-0 result versus Metro United WFC in Round 16. Having experienced a difficult run of form, a result this round will do wonders for Fulham United’s season as they look to avoid relegation.

Salisbury Inter produced a memorable performance in their Round Eight matchup with Fulham United as they won 9-1. Maria Jose Rojas Pino was vital in the team's win that day, scoring four herself, while Nicole Calder, Khal Adam Khan, Emily Heazlewood and Sharni Tansell all contributed to goals.

Losing last round to Adelaide City, the loss now sees Salisbury Inter sit four points away from the top two in third. Taking an early lead through Emily Heazlewood last round, two late Adelaide City goals saw Salisbury Inter fall to only their fourth defeat of the season. Currently, level on points with Adelaide Comets, Salisbury Inter need to return to winning ways as they look to remain in third and potentially catch Adelaide City in second.

Fulham United line-up: 1. Natalie Hayman (GK), 2. Charlotte Waters, 3. Susan Roberts, 4. Natasha Vella (C), 5. Georgina Toome, 7. Hannah Doyle, 8. Kara Davies, 10. Elizabeth Cufari, 12. Women’s State League Preview

WSL

The Women’s State League heads into its second to last round of the season, with an exciting Round 17 ahead. To kick off Round 17, Elizabeth Grove will host Adelaide Hills at Dauntsey Reserve. Elizabeth Grove has experienced a difficult first season in the Women’s State League which has seen the team win only one game thus far, with the team unfortunate not to pick up a point last round in a 2-1 loss to Modbury Jets. Their opponents Adelaide Hills currently sit in fourth, however, the 12-point gap between them and South Adelaide in second means that they will be unable to push for a spot in the Promotion playoff match no matter their results over the next two weeks. In other action, Cove FC will look to put a hold on Flinders United’s promotion parade as they look for a big win this weekend. Like Adelaide Hills, Cove FC are currently unable to secure a place in the promotion playoff match this season, however, are still eager to finish the season in third. Their opponents Flinders United will be hoping to cap off a fantastic season this week, with one win needed for the team to secure promotion into the WNPLSA for season 2023 and the league premiership. To close Round 17, Campbelltown City will host Modbury Jets at Steve Woodcock Sports Centre. It’s been a difficult first season for Campbelltown City which currently sit at the bottom of the Women’s State League with one point. They will be searching for their first win of the season as they play Modbury Jets who are looking to jump into fifth with a win this weekend.
