After all the frustration of the 2022 WNPLSA season, Modbury Vista enter what could be their final match of the year. Currently holding a two-point lead on tenth place WT Birkalla, a loss to WT Birkalla this round will see Modbury Vista have a chance at remaining in the WNPLSA for season 2023 in the WNPL & WSL Promotion Play-off match. However, Modbury Vista could have their 2023 WNPLSA status saved tonight if they are to secure their first victory of the season or gain a point, while they need Fulham United to lose their match. Modbury Vista has been unfortunate not to have secured a victory over their last four fixtures, earning three draws and one loss, while holding back-to-back 1-1 draws in the past two weeks. Last week Pirrie Weeks secured her third goal of the season as her finish earned her side a valuable point that could potentially see the team remain in the league for another season.

Their last matchup against Football SA NTC ended in disaster as they recorded a 5-0 loss. However, it was a pleasant night for the Football SA NTC squad as they saw five different players score, including Erin Kontoutsikos, Camila Madriz Figueroa, Emilia Murray, Victoria Costanzo and Claire Scarpin.

Football SA NTC’s fate now lies directly in their own hands as a win, or a draw will secure the team a fifth-place finish and their second consecutive Final Series appearance. Last week the team experienced their sixth loss of the season as they fell to a 4-2 defeat to league Premiers West Adelaide. Although opening the scoring within the first minute through Claire Scarpin and increasing their lead to 2-1 as Erin Kontoutsikos converted from the penalty spot, Football SA NTC was unable to hold their lead. After facing back-to-back losses, Football SA NTC’s season now lies on their final fixture of the season.

Adelaide Comets

With Finals secured for both teams, this game is merely an opportunity for each team to gain great momentum heading into the 2022 Finals Series.

West Adelaide has continued their dominant run of form that has spanned back to the first round of the season with a valuable win in Round 17. After going down 1-0 within the opening minute of last week’s match against Football SA NTC, a 19th-minute Olivia Bramley goal and a hattrick by Racheal Quigley saw West Adelaide secure a 4-2 victory and their 15th win of the season. Already securing first place and the premiership, West Adelaide is now set to have the first week off from the Finals Series.

In the team’s only matchup this season, West Adelaide secured a convincing victory over Adelaide Comets as they won 5-1. Georgia Macri's opening goal and a brace from both Racheal Quigley and Laura Johns helped West Adelaide to victory on the night, while Chrissy Panagaris added one of her own for Adelaide Comets from the penalty spot.

Although their 1-0 loss to Adelaide City last week, Adelaide Comets will be highly pleased to have secured fourth place and their first appearance in the WNPLSA Finals Series. A win over West Adelaide will give the team great confidence heading into this year’s Finals Series.

WT Birkalla vs Salisbury Inter
8:15 pm | Friday 26 August | Jack Smith Park
Last Meeting:
(3/6/22) Round Nine | Salisbury Inter 6 v WT Birkalla 2

WT Birkalla
Facebook: West Torrens Birkalla SC

With only one match remaining, there is no better time for WT Birkalla to gain their first win of the season. Facing a tough challenge in third place Salisbury Inter, WT Birkalla must produce their best performance of the season to remain in the WNPLSA for season 2023. WT Birkalla experience their 13th loss of the season in Round 17 as a strong second-half performance by Metro United WFC saw the game finish 5-3. First-half goals by Micaela Quinn and Marie Heinrich gave WT Birkalla a 2-1 lead at the break, with Mariah Aplin’s Goal of the Week strike unable to generate any points for her team. A draw or loss will not be enough for WT Birkalla in Round 18 with two points currently separating themselves and ninth place Modbury Vista.

It was another devasting loss for WT Birkalla in their last matchup with Salisbury Inter, as two Sarah Chappel goals were still unable to provide her team with three points. Salisbury Inter however had a night to remember as they put six past the WT Birkalla, with Maria Rojas Pino securing a double, while Chantelle Ryder, Emily Heazlewood, Mina Nishitani and Nicola Frazzetto all produced goals each.

Although facing a drop-off from last season’s performances, the 2022 season has still been a success for Salisbury Inter who will more than likely end the season in third. Salisbury Inter will be extremely pleased to have secured their eleventh win of the season last week as their efforts paid off with Erin Hood converting from the penalty spot in the fifth minute of injury time. After the success of their 2021 Finals Series campaign, Salisbury Inter will be hoping for a strong showing this season.

Fulham United vs Adelaide City
8:15 pm | Friday 26 August | West Beach Parks Football Centre
Last Meeting:
(3/6/22) Round Nine | Adelaide City 2 v Fulham United 0

Fulham United
Facebook: Fulham United Football Club

Fulham United’s push for survival is almost complete, with the team in a great position to secure their WNPLSA status for season 2023. Having struggled throughout the 2022 season, which has seen the team win only once and draw four in 17 games, Fulham United will be hoping that their season doesn’t end in relegation. Fulham United would have been clear of relegation and two points clear from the WNPL & WSL promotion play-off match, however a Georgina Toome red card in the fifth minute of injury time gifted Salisbury Inter a penalty and the 1-0 win. Facing a difficult challenge against Adelaide City, Fulham United could remain in the WNPLSA with a loss if WT Birkalla and Modbury Vista are both to lose.

Adelaide City were 2-0 victors in their last matchup with Fulham United in Round Nine, as a first-half Katie Bowler goal from the penalty spot and a Mawa Sumaoro last-minute goal gave the side the three points.

Missing out on the premiership, Adelaide City will still be confident heading into this year’s Finals Series. Adelaide City will be hoping to extend their run to four consecutive victories with a win over Fulham United tonight. Last week saw Katie Bowler secure her tenth goal of the season as her second-half goal gave Adelaide City a valuable 1-0 win over fourth-placed Adelaide Comets. With second place secured, Adelaide City will now be hoping for a big win tonight which will help them prepare for their Finals Series clash next week.

Adelaide University vs Metro United WFC
8:15 pm | Friday 26 August | APEX Football Stadium
Last Meeting:
(4/6/22) Round Nine | Metro United WFC 1 v Adelaide University 1

Adelaide University

With the season heading into its final round, Round 18 will mark Adelaide University’s final match of the season as they are set to finish the season in seventh. In a season that has been a massive improvement from that of the previous season, a poor run of four losses and one draw in their last five games has prevented the team from fighting for a top-five spot. The team was devasted to have not secured a victory last week as Georgia Box’s 36th-minute goal was cancelled out by a Modbury Vista equaliser. With their season coming to an end, Adelaide University will be hoping to end their season with a victory.

Adelaide University played out an evenly contested encounter in their Round Nine matchup with Metro United WFC. First-half goals by Roxanne Dodd and Tanaye Morris for their respective sides saw the match end in a 1-1 draw.

Two wins in their last two matches have now seen Metro United WFC stay within the running of obtaining the last Finals Series spot in season 2022. Coming from behind to secure a 5-3 win over WT Birkalla closed the gap with Football SA NTC in fifth to only two points. Victoria Mansueto was the star that night as her hattrick led her team to victory, while goals by Roxanne Dodd and Laura Stockdale helped in securing the win. Metro United WFC must now rely on a Modbury Vista victory over Football SA NTC and a win themselves to secure fifth place and to continue their season past this week.

Adelaide University line-up: 2. Elle Pirintzis, 3. Gemma MacFarlane, 6. Alysia Panagakos, 8. Stella Rigon (C), 9. Chanel Todino, 10. Georgia Iannella, 11. Ellie Sparrow, 12. Georgia Box, 13. Women’s State League Preview

Women's State League

The Women’s State League comes to an end this weekend with four fantastic games Sunday afternoon. Elizabeth Grove faces a difficult challenge as they take on the Women’s State League Champions Flinders United whose 3-0 win over Cove FC secured promotion to the WNPLSA for season 2023. Other action sees second place South Adelaide face fourth place Adelaide Hills at O’Sullivans Beach Sports and Community Centre. Adelaide Hills will be looking for a victory that will potentially take them to third, while South Adelaide is hoping to enter their WNPL & WSL Promotion play-off match in great form with a win this week giving them great confidence. Modbury Jets will host Cove FC at Smith Partners Stadium, as both teams are hope to end their seasons with wins, while Campbelltown City seeks their first win of the season as they travel to West Beach Parks Football Centre to take on Adelaide Jaguars. Amongst all the action, the big story of the weekend is the golden boot race. Currently, the golden boot race sees three players sit level on 15 goals each as Flinders United’s Eliza Macdonald-Hall, South Adelaide’s Nikki Henkens and Cove FC’s Olivia Ieraci all fight for the honour of being the league’s top goal scorer.
