Inter and West look to stay in the chase | WNPLSA Round 9 Preview

Metro United WFC vs Football SA NTC
Venue: VALO Football Centre
Date: Friday 7 August 6:15 PM

Metro will be licking their wounds after another heavy defeat to a top competitor, facing up to another out of form side in NTC.

Metro were humbled by a four-goal margin for the second successive week, this time swept aside 4-0 by the imperious Adelaide City, and despite still sitting in fourth continue to fire blanks, having scored just three goals in their last five matches.

NTC have also struggled since the restart and were leapfrogged by Comets after last week’s 2-1 defeat, their opponents’ first of the season, to now sit in seventh.

With both sides yet to truly hit their straps this season, both will be desperate to seize the opportunity to grab three points and keep their heads above water.

Adelaide Comets vs Adelaide City
Venue: VALO Football Centre – Pitch 2
Date: Friday 7 August 6:15 PM

Comets will enter the match buoyed by earning a long-awaited first win of the season last week but will have to pull out all the stops to overcome a City side in near-unstoppable form.

A 2-1 victory was enough for Comets to move clear of second bottom of the ladder and bring fifth-placed Fulham within site, sitting just three points behind them with a healthy goal difference advantage.

City, meanwhile, backed up their hammering of fellow title chaser West Adelaide with another 4-0 win, this time against Metro, to once again boost their goal difference and maintain their lead at the summit.

Comets will be fighting an uphill battle against the most in-form team in the league, who are yet to find a way to stop scoring huge bags of goals.

Fulham United vs Adelaide University
Venue: VALO Football Centre
Date: Friday 7 August 8:15 PM

This fixture presents an opportunity for two out of sorts sides to pick up a crucial three points as the 2020 season moves into its second 45.

Fulham shipped another three goals against West last week and have now conceded eight more than any side and perilously sit just four points above NTC in seventh, having won one of their last five matches and losing the other four.

After a series of improved defensive performances since the resumption of the season, Uni were dominated by Inter in a 6-0 drubbing that leaves them bottom of the table and three points behind any other side.

With the sides picking up just three and two points respectively over their last five matches, tonight’s match dangles the golden carrot of three points in front of both Fulham and Uni to see who will get their teeth into it first.

Salisbury Inter vs West Adelaide
Venue: VALO Football Centre – Pitch 2
Date: Friday 7 August 8:15 PM

The match of the round will be played on Valo’s second pitch tonight as second faces off against third in a match that is set to cause a shake-up at the top of the table.

Inter have largely proven a force to be reckoned over the last four matches, scoring five or more goals in each of their last three wins and claiming outright second place in the process.

West’s title credentials took a hit after their dismantling at the hands of City but were able to rebound with a 3-1 win over Fulham to keep themselves in touch with the top two and, more importantly, six points clear of fourth.

With second place on the table for whoever is able to grab it, both Inter and West will have to be on their A-game to come away with the chocolates tonight.
