WNPLSA Preview | Round Nine

WNPLSA Fixtures

Adelaide Comets vs Metro United
Venue: VALO Football Centre
Date: Friday 18 June 6:15 PM

Round 9 kicks off on Friday night as Comets take on Metro, with both sides entering the contest desperate for victory for different reasons.

Comets were humbled by City last week, taking an early lead before being handily defeated 4-1 to leave them in seventh with seven points in as many games, having conceded nine times in their last two losses.

Metro, meanwhile, put the rest of the competition on notice by defeating the previously unbeaten Salisbury Inter 3-2 to register their third consecutive victory and further entrench themselves in the top half.

Comets will have to start stringing results together if they’re to mount an assault on the top half, but Metro have hit some excellent, free-scoring form of late and will certainly be tough to beat.

Salisbury Inter vs Football SA NTC
Venue: VALO Football Centre
Date: Friday 18 June 8:15PM

Fresh off their first defeat of the season, Inter have a point to prove as they host NTC in what shapes as the match of the round between the clubs in second and third place.

After taking an early lead, Inter were unable to take anything away from their match against reigning champions Metro to let their advantage at the top of the table slip and fall into second on the ladder.

NTC have been impressive this season but were edged out by a single goal against new leaders West, a result that saw them fall to four points behind the top two and are now level on points with Metro.

Both sides will be aiming to rebound from their narrow losses tonight and continue their charge as they vie for WNPL supremacy by the end of the season.

West Adelaide vs Fulham United
Venue: TK Shutter Reserve
Date: Saturday 19 June 1:00 PM

It’s top versus bottom in the early kick-off tomorrow afternoon as high-flyers West take on a lowly Fulham outfit still searching for their first win of the season.

A hard-fought 1-0 victory against NTC earned West all three points last weekend for the sixth time this season and sent them back to the league summit after Inter dropped points, now sitting two points clear of their closest rival.

Fulham, meanwhile, picked up their second point of the season in a 0-0 stalemate against Uni to end a run of five consecutive defeats, slightly reducing the gap on the rest of the competition to five points.

West would see this match as a must-win to continue their fine form and stave off the chasing pack, while Fulham must start to pick up results if they are to take anything from this season.

West Adelaide line-up: 1. Erin Murphy, 2. Emily Hodgson, 3. Alison Atkins, 6. Elena Psaroulis, 7. Lara Kirkby, 8. Georgia Macri, 9. Harriet Burnett, 10. Georgie Nicola, 11. Laura Johns, 12. Adelaide City vs Adelaide University
Venue: Adelaide City Park
Date: Saturday 19 June 2:30 PM

City and Uni cap off the round with their match at Adelaide City Park tomorrow afternoon, a fixture which both sides will be desperate to win to keep touch with the top four.

The hosts rebounded from a heavy defeat to Metro with a big win over Comets, breaking a three-match stretch without victory and picking up their second of the season to remain four points outside the top four.

Uni are only two points and one place behind City but have only picked up four points from their last seven matches, the most recent of which came in a 0-0 draw with rock-bottom Fulham.

A win to City would boost their chances of continuing their streak of finals football this season after a shaky start, while Uni will be hoping to repeat the 3-1 victory they claimed over City in Round 1 tomorrow.
