WNPLSA Round Five Preview

Round Five

Adelaide University vs Fulham United
Venue: VALO Football Centre
Date: Friday 14 May 6:15 PM

Uni and Fulham kick off Round 5 under lights tonight at VALO Football Centre each with a point to prove off the back of disappointing defeats last weekend.

Uni have failed to pick up a point in their last three matches, the most recent of which was a dramatic 2-0 defeat to the previously winless Comets in which they conceded both goals in the last five minutes.

Fulham remain the only side left yet to register a league victory in 2021, with their most recent result a thumping 5-0 loss to high flyers Inter last weekend, and are bottom with a single point after four rounds.

Fulham will be more desperate than anyone now to break their duck and break their early-season drought, while Uni are hoping to get their season back on track after an unfortunate run of results.

Adelaide Comets vs Adelaide City
Venue: SA Athletics Stadium
Date: Friday 14 May 7:30 PM

Comets were impressive in their first victory of the season last weekend but they’ll face a stern test to back it up tonight as City pay them a visit.

Their 2-0 triumph over Uni kept the hearts racing at Comets, with Valeria Guajardo and Georgia Oliver netting in the 87th and 91st minutes to snatch all three points.

City’s match also had its share of late drama, but they were forced to settle for a point in their matchup against NTC in which Chelsie Dawber’s 85th-minute penalty was cancelled out by Nicola Scalzi’s spot-kick five minutes later.

Comets’ breakthrough win last week provides them to push on and build momentum into the mid-season, while City will be hoping to stamp their authority and show that they’re still title contenders despite the slow start.

Adelaide Comets line-up: Sian Fryer-Mclaren (GK), 3. Chantelle Reed, 4. Emily Gale, 7. Valeria Guajardo (C), 8. Christine Skrembos, 11. Georgia Oliver, 13. Elyse Moon, 14. Pirrie Weeks, 19. INTERvMETRO

Salisbury Inter vs Metro United
Venue: VALO Football Centre
Date: Friday 14 May 8:15 PM

Inter are looking the real deal at the moment with a strong start to the season, but they’ll know a match against the reigning champions isn’t one to turn their noses up at.

The return of Cote Rojas has given Inter a major boost, with the Chilean star netting a hat-trick in their 5-0 win over Fulham last weekend to make it five goals in two matches this year.

Metro, meanwhile, haven’t quite recaptured their sparkling finals form from last season in the early stages of the season and lost their second successive match last weekend against West.

With Inter firing on all cylinders, they’ll certainly be a tough outfit to get past, but if anyone knows anything about finding a way against the odds, it’s Metro.

Salisbury Inter line-up: Jaya Pagatpat, 1. Matilda Comley, 2. Khal Adam Khan, 4. Gabrielle Bentley, 5. Isabella  Kouimtzis, 6. Nicole Calder, 7. Maria Jose Rojas Pino, 8. Emily Condon, 10. Chrissa Pavlomanolakos, 11. Nicola Frazzetto, 12. Chantelle Ryder (C), 14. Emily Heazlewood, 17. Dragana Kljajic, 23. Anna Pritchard, 24. Mina Nishitani, 76. Zafiro Papanikitas (GK)

Coaches: Simon Catanzaro, Brad Donovan, Darran King

West Adelaide vs Football SA NTC
Venue: TK Shutter Reserve
Date: Saturday 15 May 3:00 PM

West and NTC wrap up the round of fixtures tomorrow afternoon at TK Shutter Reserve in what promises to be an entertaining duel.

Yet to taste defeat in the league, the most recent of West’s three wins in four was an impressive 2-1 triumph over Metro at this ground last weekend.

NTC have been a fascinating side to watch, with their hard-fought and dramatic 1-1 draw with City last weekend the first league fixture they’ve competed in this season to dish up less than four strikes.

West will take some beating following their impressive start to the 2021 campaign, but four points against both 2020 Grand Finalists is sending warning signs to the competition that NTC could be a dangerous prospect this season.

West Adelaide line-up: Christie Hillyer, Jasmine Styles, Nicole Tilley (C), 2. Emily Hodgson, 3. Alison Atkins, 6. Elena Psaroulis, 7. Lara Kirkby, 8. Georgia Macri, 10. Georgie Nicola, 11. Laura Johns, 13. Maddie DuRieu, 19. Zoe Haralampopoulos, 23. Sarah Willacy (GK), 24. Mawa Sumaoro, 27. Danica Fajardo

Football SA NTC line-up: 2. Abbey Burns, 3. Michaela Belmonte, 4. Zoe Tolland, 5. Katie Bowler, 6. Ella Tonkin, 8. Nicola Scalzi, 9. Anastasia Willoughby, 11. Emilia Murray, 12. Libby Davy, 13.
