Laws of the Game

This course is a pre-requisite for all new referees who are starting their officiating journey to become a qualified referee.

You must complete this course before enrolling into:

Step Two: Complete the Online Junior Football Match Official or Senior Football Match Official course and enrol in a Classroom Recap and Practical Session.

 

Both The Junior and Senior Match official course contain an online and in person component.

The Junior Football Match Official Online Course explores key refereeing topics providing current interpretations of technical concepts, including challenges, handball, offside, game management, match control and positioning concepts. You must complete this course before enrolling into:

Junior Football Match Official Classroom Recap and Practical

This in-person event combines classroom discussions with on-field practical training, led by Football South Australia  Educators.

The classroom session revisits key JFMO topics, including challenges, handball and offside, while the on-field component introduces essential refereeing techniques, practiced in game-simulated scenarios.

You must enrol and attend this in Classroom Recap and Practical to complete the JFMO qualification. This is the final step before you can officiate in local Junior Football competitions within your Member Federation.

Senior Football Match Official Online Course

To advance your referee qualifications or begin your officiating journey, enrol in the Senior Football Match Official Online Course. Building on the Junior Football Match Official foundation, this course introduces advanced topics such as tactical fouls, mass confrontation, and techniques required to manage senior football effectively.

To enrol directly in this course, you must be a minimum of 18 years old with at least two (2) years football experience, and complete Laws of the Game

If you are under 18 years old:

  • Junior Football Match Official qualification; and
    • Officiated Junior Football for a minimum of two (2) years

You must complete this course before enrolling into:

Senior Football Match Official Classroom Recap and Practical

This in-person event, led by Football South Australia Educators, combines classroom discussions with on-field practical training.

The classroom session revisits key SFMO topics including match control, challenges, handball, and tactical fouls. The format of the session encourages analysis and group discussions of real match scenarios involving effective communication and player management.

You must enrol and attend the Classroom Recap and Practical to complete the SFMO qualification. This is the final step before you can officiate in local Senior Football competitions within your Member Federation.
